Mr Christophe Gégout, Deputy Chairperson of the CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission), was recently in India to strengthen cooperation on solar energy, energy storage (batteries and hydrogen) and electric mobility. His visit from 29 to 31 January forms part of CEA’s long-term exchanges with Indian institutional and industrial stakeholders in the field of renewable energies, which have helped establish collaborations both at the academic and industrial levels.

Mr Christophe Gégout thus met representatives from Indian ministries as well as industrialists from these sectors. He held meetings with Shri Anand Kumar, Secretary - Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), and Dr Arun Tripathi, Director General - National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE). The CEA and the NISE are currently working on the finalization of a memorandum of understanding structuring cooperation on technological research and training on renewable energy.

India has set itself the ambitious goal of adding an installed solar capacity of 100 GWe by 2022. Supporting the attainment of this goal, the CEA is considering partnerships with Indian industrialists for implementing technological innovations developed by the French National Solar Energy Institute (CEA/INES) for upscaling production and optimizing production units.

More broadly, the CEA offers innovative solutions for a wide range of applications, such as the decarbonisation of transport and the electrification of rural areas, to its Indian industrial counterparts. In the Indian market, it helps implement technologies derived from French, European and Indian innovations, creating synergies between India and France in the solar energy and more broadly renewable energy sector (solar panels, storage, grid management, electric mobility).

Mr Christophe Gégout also called on Shri Upendra Tripathy, Interim Director General of the International Solar Alliance. They discussed the implementation of actions mentioned during Mr Tripathy’s visit of INES, France, in December 2017 (link), viz training, electric mobility, quality control of components used for photovoltaic cells manufacturing. The CEA wishes to become a major partner of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) with a view to being a centre of excellence for France and providing its expertise alongside the NISE.
