World Environment Day 2017 in Kolkata
The Consul General of France, Damien Syed, took part on 5 June in a World Environment Day programme on the Ganges and gave the "Serader Sera Nirmal Pujo Puroskar" (The Greenest of the Green Puja Award) held by non profit EnGIO in association with the Government of West Bengal, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and other actors.
Mr. Syed congratulated the award winners and spoke about the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Officials, environmentalists, academicians and members of community clubs attended the programme on the cruise ship along with the West Bengal Power Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Mayoral Council Member Debasish Kumar, State’s Pollution Control Board Chairman Kalyan Rudra and Zoological Survey of India’s Director Kailash Chandra.
Initiated 10 years ago, this award has been a pioneering effort in West Bengal to promote environmental awareness and ecological practices through the involvement of community clubs and people of the State during puja. The effort has received national and international kudos, and has contributed to improving green atmosphere in Kolkata. The process is being expanded through "Sabuj puja theke sabuj para" (Green Puja to Green Neighbourhood), a project which has already been launched in two areas.
The theme of this evening’s programme was on Sabuj Para, a community driven green initiative, which fitted in glove with this year’s World Environment Day’s slogan of "connecting people with nature".
