Visit of the French Ambassador to Chandernagore
The Ambassador of France to India, Mr. Alexandre Ziegler, was in West Bengal from 5th February evening till 7th February morning. His second trip to the State took him to the capital city of Kolkata as well as Chandannagar.
During his visit to the former French township on 6th February 2017, Ambassador Ziegler met with Father Orson Wells of the Sacred Heart Church in Chandannagar, where he unveiled a statue before visiting the French cemetery.
Thereafter, he undertook a guided heritage tour of historic French buildings with urban conservation architect Mrs. Aishwarya Tipnis.
Visiting the Institut de Chandernagor with its Director, Dr. Phalguni Mukherjee, he inaugurated an exhibition on the history of Chandannagar at the cultural centre and museum.
Mr. Ziegler also went to Chandernagore College, where he had a meeting with the Principal Prof. Debashis Sarkar, and a lively interaction with the faculty, and students of the Department of French and its Head, Prof. Basabi Pal. Mr. Ziegler announced that a French digital corner will be created in the College this year. The Ambassador also had a phone conversation with the Higher Education Minister of West Bengal, Mr. Partha Chatterjee.
The Ambassador was accompanied by the Consul General of France in Kolkata, Mr. Damien Syed, the Cultural Counsellor of the French Embassy, Dr. Bertrand de Hartingh, and the Director of Alliance française du Bengale, Mr. Stéphane Amalir.
