New Delhi, 30 October 2019
H.E. Mrs Brune Poirson, Minister of State for Ecological and Inclusive Transition of France, undertook a visit to India, from 30th October to 1st November 2019.
Minister Poirson was in India to co-preside over the second Assembly of the International Solar Alliance on 31st October, along with Shri Raj Kumar Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State (IC) of Power, and New and Renewable Energy. The International Solar Alliance brings together 80 States and offers concrete solutions that help reduce the cost of solar installations, particularly in developing countries.
Minister Poirson called on Minister Raj Kumar Singh for deepening the India-France cooperation in renewable energy, and ways to strengthen the International Solar Alliance with member countries.
Minister Poirson also met Shri Prakash Javadekar, Hon’ble Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, to follow up on climate commitments made by our leaders during the last visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to France. This meeting was also aimed at preparing for the COP25 Climate Change and the COP15 Biodiversity conferences.
During her visit, Minister Poirson also interacted with members of India’s civil society committed to reducing plastic pollution. On 30th October 2019 in Mumbai, she joined UN "Champion of the Earth" awardee, lawyer and citizen activist, Mr Afroz Shah, for plogging. She also met Mr Saurabh Gupta, founder of Earth5R NGO in Powai.
On 31st October 2019 at the Embassy of France in India, Minister Poirson met young professionals, students and influencers who contribute to a greater understanding of environmental issues to exchange views with them on the best ways to mobilise French and Indian civil societies.
This is Minister Poirson’s fourth visit to India in two years. Formerly resident in India, she spent five years in Delhi before leaving the city in 2015. She remains deeply attached to this country, its people, and holds a deeply-rooted conviction: tomorrow’s world will be forged with India. Under the leadership of the French President Emmanuel Macron, Minister Poirson is at the forefront of France’s efforts to build coalitions to step up the fight against climate change. Ms Poirson was elected Vice-President of the United Nations Environment Assembly in March 2019.
