US Clean Power Plan marks break with past, says President

Climate disruption/COP21/America’s Clean Power Plan – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, 4 August 2015

The French President salutes the courage of President Obama, who has announced the finalization of America’s Clean Power Plan. This plan is a milestone in the decarbonization of America’s economy. It marks a break with the past by setting a target, for the first time, to reduce CO2 emissions in energy production.

It makes a major contribution to the success of the Paris climate change conference.

France is going to continue coordinating all initiatives, particularly at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September, so that nations – especially the most developed ones – shoulder their responsibilities./.

Statement by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development

Paris, 3 August 2015

I welcome two important, positive decisions which confirm the international community’s determination to adopt a universal climate agreement in Paris in December 2015.

On Sunday, the text of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was approved by negotiators from every United Nations member state, with a view to its adoption at the New York summit at the end of September. Among other things, the text calls for an ambitious and universal agreement in Paris in December and creates a new Sustainable Development Goal: urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

On Monday, President Obama adopted a regulation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from American power plants. This plan demonstrates the United States’ commitment to the fight against climate disruption./.
