The Prophet and the Poet
A play based on the exchange of letters and articles between Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore over 25 years, with the Indian freedom struggle as the backdrop.
Alliance Française de Bangalore is pleased to present a very special theatrical event staged specially for all our members, students and guests by our cultural partner, Bangalore Little Theatre
It is a privilege to have the play performed at Alliance Française in the year of Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary.
The play premiered by invitation at Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram. Subsequently BLT was invited by both Visva Bharati University at Santiniketan and Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata to perform at their institutions. The Kolkata performance was at the courtyard stage of Tagore’s home in JoraSanko, now a heritage site looked after by Rabindra Bharati.
There have been over forty performances of the play since its opening. The play has generated much interest outside India as well. It has had two American productions in 2011, one in Houston and the other at the Unversity of Iowa. Two more are planned in 2012. Productions in UK and Ireland are also planned in 2012. A highly successful tour of Trinidad & Tobago was arranged by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in October 2011. It was followed by a second tour of Bangladesh in November, organized by the Ministry of Culture as part of the India-Bangladesh Joint Celebrations of Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary.
