Sport diplomacy in France [fr]
Presentation of key initiatives for sport diplomacy in France (Paris, January 15, 2014)
Laurent Fabius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Valérie Fourneyron, the Minister for Sport, Youth, Lifelong Education and Voluntary Organizations, chaired a presentation on sport diplomacy to support French sport on the international stage on 15 January at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This event was attended by high-profile figures from the world of sport (including Marie-José Pérec, Edgar Grospiron, Laura Flessel and Jean-Philippe Gatien), as well as from business and the media.
We use sport as a tool for international influence, competitiveness and job creation. It therefore plays an important role in our economic and soft diplomacy, and is promoted by all departments of the French Government.
At this event, Laurent Fabius and Valérie Fourneyron presented the initiatives that have recently been launched to raise the profile of French sport internationally. In particular, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently increased its staff by creating the post of ambassador for sport, responsible for pursuing three targets:
assist French companies on sport-related markets;
endorse French applications to host large sporting events;
increase our presence on international sports committees.
