Statements by the French authorities - 17 August 2017
Paris, 17 August 2017
The attack that has just been perpetrated in Barcelona, in the heart of an animated space frequented by young people, is a fresh, reprehensible attack against our free societies.
Mr Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, conveys his deepest sympathies to the victims, their families and their near and dear ones in this tragic time. France expresses its heartfelt grief and full solidarity for Barcelona and all of Spain.
The President of the French Republic is in touch with the Spanish authorities to follow the situation. The government is mobilized to provide all necessary information and assistance to our fellow citizens present in Barcelona.
Our action against terrorism will continue relentlessly. It is with absolute determination that France will carry on this combat at Spain’s side.
Paris, 17 August 2017
It was with deep grief that I learnt of the toll taken by the attack perpetrated in Barcelona, for which Daesh/ISIS has claimed responsibility. I condemn it in the firmest terms.
Twenty-six French nationals were injured, including at least eleven who sustained serious injuries. My thoughts go out to these fellow citizens as well as to their near and dear ones, to whom I convey my deepest sympathy at this painful time.
I will visit Barcelona today so as to meet the French victims of this cowardly act and assure the Spanish people and authorities of France’s support.
As soon as the news of the attack had broken, I had directed that a Crisis Control Room be opened at the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs so as to obtain updates on our compatriots’ safety and respond to their kin. The Control Room team has been working through the night and has received over 3,200 calls as of now. The Control Room remains open and calls continue being attended to.
In Barcelona, our Consulate General, in liaison with the Spanish authorities, is doing its utmost to extend all necessary support to French citizens affected by this attack. In response to this emergency, I have directed healthcare professionals to be dispatched to this city. The first of them will reach today to provide psychological support and assist the victims’ families. Additional teams will join them.
Our fellow citizens’ security abroad is a matter of absolute priority that the employees of the ministry and its diplomatic and French consular network pursue every day. I thank all those who immediately responded with dedication in Barcelona, Madrid and Paris to provide assistance to the victims and their kin.
