Paris climate summit in 2015 "a tremendous opportunity"
Climate disruption – Reply by Mme Ségolène Royal, Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Developmentand Energy, to a question in the National Assembly
Paris, 25 June 2014
The climate conference to be held next year in Paris is both a tremendous opportunity for Paris, France and Europe – because we’ll be the showcase of the whole world – and a burning obligation, from at least three viewpoints.
First of all, France must present an exemplary energy model. We’ve begun work on this, and the Assembly will soon have to decide about the bill on the new French energy model, aimed at successfully completing the energy transition. The latter consists in saving energy, boosting renewable energy, taking a step towards energy independence and emerging from the crisis through green growth and new jobs linked to the new development model.
Europe, too, must be exemplary. The European Council planned tomorrow will have energy on its agenda, because we all have an obligation to act together at global level and transfer our technology to the poorest countries, in Africa in particular, so that they can gain access to energy autonomy thanks to solar, wind and geothermal power. The continent has every means to achieve energy independence and therefore sustainable development.
This will be the third obligation we have at the climate conference: to restore dialogue between North and South with a view to envisaging human progress on every latitude, whatever our development levels, on the basis of fundamental values and development choices./.
