Indian government distinction "Padma Shri" conferred on Devayani
Well-known French Bharatnatyam dancer DEVAYANI was awarded the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards in India, on 26th January 2009, the 60th Republic Day of India. The PADMA SHRI Award is given to the most distinguished persons in recognition of their outstanding services & achievements.
The award was conferred on Devayani by the President of India, Mrs Pratibha Patil, on 14th April 2009 at an awards presentation ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan, the official residence of the President. Devayani is the first French classical dancer to have made it to this elite list. Her other awards include the 2004 IMM Top Cultural Ambassador Award for Excellence (also in New Delhi) and the National Women Excellence Award 2008.
Trained under the tutelage of K. G. Ellapa Mudaliar and Kalaimamani V. S. Muthuswami Pillai of the temple towns of South India, Devayani took Indian audiences by storm with her acting and dance performances in the lead role of the Telugu film ’America Ammayi’ even before making her debut on the stage in Madras. Devayani is an ardent protagonist of promoting Bharata Natyam in its pristine form. Moving from Madras to Delhi, the dancer formed her own troupe, performing in all parts of India, including the picturesque Ajanta & Ellora caves and at most of the renowned cultural centres and festivals. She has enthralled audiences at festivals and concert halls in UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, the Scandinavian countries, Estonia, Korea and Portugal, where she was infact given top billing with legendary opera singer Luciano Pavarotti. Devayani was the only artist to represent India officially for Indian Dance at the World Culture Open 2004 in Seoul, South Korea.
