The French Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Mr Bruno Le Maire, was on a two-day visit to India from 7th to 8th October 2010. The purpose of the Minister’s visit was to have high-level discussions, in the framework of the coming French Presidency of the G20, on international responses to excessive food price volatility in order to reduce global food insecurity.

The Minister visited Azadpur Mandi, said to be the largest wholesale vegetable and fruit market in Asia.
The Minister also visited the Carrefour project in Palla village. The project involves the development of vegetable production, implemented within a cooperative. A research organization (PUSA) is also providing support to the cooperative.
Carrefour has launched this project to support Palla farmers for a year and half as part of its activities on corporate social and environmental responsibility. The village has about 8000 inhabitants, half of whom are involved in agriculture.
Training is being imparted especially to women in the field of vegetable sorting and packing. Carrefour donated a greenhouse to make vegetable seedlings to the cooperative. When Carrefour would have opened a significant number of shops, such producers could become suppliers.
