Mission in the Sundarbans to visit livelihoods projects
The Consul General Damien Syed went on a mission, on 29 March 2017, to the vulnerable Sundarbans to visit projects run by Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS).
This NGO helps rural communities restore and preserve their ecosystems to improve their livelihoods.
These ecosystems provide food security and offer tangible benefits to fight climate change in accordance with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention).
NEWS is supported by Livelihoods Carbon Fund (LCF) launched in 2011 by ten French companies as an evolution from the Danone Fund for Nature created in 2008: Danone, Schneider Electric, Crédit Agricole, Michelin, Hermès, SAP, Groupe Caisse des Dépôts, La Poste, Firmenich et Voyageur du Monde.
In return for their financial contribution, these investors receive carbon credits with high social value, which they can use to offset part of the emissions they cannot avoid.
