Master Class by renowned film maker Claire Denis [fr]

“Cinema is not made to give a psychological explanation. For me, cinema is montage, editing. To make blocks of impressions or emotions meet another block of impressions or emotions, and put in between pieces of explanation, to me it’s boring… Our brains are full of literature – my brain is. But I think we also have a dream world, the brain is also full of images and songs, and I think that making films for me is to get rid of explanation.”

Renowned filmmaker Claire Denis will be visiting Film and Television Institute of India (FTII, Pune) in the first and second week of July, 2013 to conduct workshop and to interact with the students. She has contributed to a great extent to the development of formal engagements of French cinema since 1980s assimilating from the cinematic experiences of French New Wave and oriental masters like Yasujiro Ozu. She is known for her ’musical’ attitude to cinema with a rare sensitivity about the French postcolonial experiences. In her films the human bodies get sculpted by the time of essence beyond the socio-historic parameters of time, while the spaces get reverberated through the formation of the new presentations of those bodies.

To mark the occasion of her coming to FTII, there will be screenings of works made by her and made on her from 1st to 12th of July, 2013.

This workshop is financed and supported by the Institut Français de Paris.
