Inder Kumar Gujral - Communiqué of the French President

It was with grief that the President of the French Republic learnt of the demise of the former Prime Minister of India Dr. Inder Kumar Gujral. On behalf of the French authorities and the French people, he conveys his sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Indian people and the family of the late Dr. Gujral for this irreparable loss.

Throughout his life, Dr IK Gujral was a resolute fighter for India’s freedom, democracy and peace. An MP from Punjab, former Ambassador to the erstwhile USSR, appointed minister on several occasions, and lastly Prime Minister and writer, he championed values that France also shares. He was an example of determination and wisdom for all.

France will remember that it was during his tenure as Prime Minister that the Indo-French strategic partnership was negotiated and concluded, in January 1998. All the succeeding governments of both countries have since pursued this great project and have borne it to ever higher levels of confidence.
