Highest French Distinction “Knight of the Legion of Honour” conferred on Dr C Raja Mohan [fr]

H.E. Mr François Richier, Ambassador of France to India, conferred the highest French distinction "Knight of the Legion of Honour" on Dr C Raja Mohan.

New Delhi, 16 March 2016

On behalf of the President of the French Republic, H.E. Mr François Richier, Ambassador of France to India, conferred the highest French civilian distinction, Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour), on Dr C Raja Mohan, Director – Carnegie India, on Wednesday, 16th March 2016.

This honour comes in recognition of Dr Raja Mohan’s extensive contribution as an influential thinker on international affairs, providing insightful analyses that have promoted mutual understanding between countries, including India and France.

C. Raja Mohan is currently Director, Carnegie India, New Delhi. He is also the Contributing Editor on foreign affairs for The Indian Express; a visiting research professor at the Institute of South Asian Studies, Singapore; and a non-resident senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC and the Lowy Institute, Sydney. Mohan was a member of India’s National Security Advisory Board.

Earlier, Mohan was Professor of South Asian Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Singapore. He also served as the Diplomatic Editor and the Washington Correspondent of The Hindu. Mohan has a master’s degree in Nuclear Physics and a Ph.D. in international relations. He was a senior fellow at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, New Delhi as well as a senior scientist at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

The Foreign Policy magazine designated him as one of the top 100 thinkers on international affairs during 2009. Mohan was the Henry Alfred Kissinger Chair in Foreign Policy and International Relations at the Library of Congress, Washington DC during 2009-10.

His recent books include Crossing the Rubicon: The Shaping of India’s New Foreign Policy (2004); Impossible Allies: Nuclear India, United States and the Global Order (2006); Samudra Manthan: Sino-Indian Rivalry in the Indo-Pacific (2013); Modi’s World: Expanding India’s Sphere of Influence (2015).

His work on maritime strategy, arms control, Asian security and Indian foreign policy has been published in many leading journals including the Foreign Affairs and Washington Quarterly. His columns have appeared in a number of newspapers including the Washington Post, Financial Times, Yomiuri Shimbun and The Straits Times.

Mohan is married to Nirmala George and has a daughter, Vasudha and a son, Prashant.

The Legion d’Honneur

The Legion d’Honneur, created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, la Légion d’Honneur (“the Legion of Honour”) is the highest civilian award given by the French Republic for outstanding service to France, regardless of the nationality of the recipients. The President of the French Republic is the Grand Master of the Order of the Legion of Honour.
