French-Indian seminar on culture and urban economy

A French-Indian seminar was held in Kolkata on 11 and 12 November about this question: “how does culture shape urban economy?”

The seminar was opened by Mr. Debashis Sen, Additional Chief Secretary of Urban Development Department, Government of West Bengal.

The link between culture and modern urban economy represents, in India as well as in France, a great opportunity not only to allow citizens to benefit from cultural outputs, but also to create wealth and jobs. It also requires a comprehensive approach, with a need of multidisciplinary and crossed perspectives.

This seminar allowed its participants a pragmatic format to develop a concrete agenda. Professionals from the French cities Marseille and Lyon interacted with a few distinguished Indian thinkers and stakeholders in order to open innovative new perspectives for French-Indian cooperation.

This seminar, organized by the Embassy of France/Institut Français en Inde and Alliance française du Bengale, was part of the preparations for the third edition of Bonjour India starting in November 2017: several months of cultural, academic and scientific events to celebrate and strengthen the Indo-French partnership with focus on social, environmental and technological innovation.
