France welcomes US-China agreement to cut greenhouse gases
Climate disruption – Statement by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development
Paris, 12 November 2014
In a world where there isn’t much of it, I regard this agreement as good news. The fact that China and the United States – which are the two biggest emitters of greenhouse gases responsible for climate disruption – have decided together to reduce their emissions is an important step forward.
This decision is a first step: alongside the European agreement of October 2014, it should encourage all countries to make practical commitments against climate disruption. It should enable us to take a positive approach to the next meetings: the COP20 in Lima in December 2014 and, above all, the decisive COP21 in Paris in December 2015, which France will chair./.
