First anniversary of the Paris Accord on climate celebrated in Kolkata.
A programme was held in Alliance française du Bengale on 15 December 2016 to celebrate the first anniversary of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Discussions focused on the implementation challenges and the use of solar energy.
Shri Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Hon’ble Minister of Power and Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Government of West Bengal, was the Chief Guest of the event.
Representatives of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, NGOs, the private sector, students and journalists took part in this programme, co-organized with FREED (“The Force for Rural Empowerment and Economic Development”).
The participants talked about the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the results of the COP22 recently held in Marrakech, and the progress of the International Solar Alliance launched last year in Paris by the Prime minister of India. Presentations were done on successful experiences of solar energy in West Bengal, in Kolkata and in villages of Sundarbans, as well as the commercial benefits of this renewable energy.
The Consul General, Mr. Damien Syed, underlined that the Paris Agreement started a movement that all stakeholders need to transform into action. This opportunity has to be seized now because it might be the last one we have to make our planet a better and a safer place.
