"Protecting the Global Commons: 20 Years Post Rio"

The Delhi Sustainable Development Summit , a global summit conceived by Dr R.K. Pachauri, Directeur General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), took place from 2 to 4 February 2012.

 
For its twelfth edition, this annual event, organised by TERI in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD), chose to focus on the preparation of the upcoming Rio+20 Summit, which will be held in Brazil in June.

This year, this high-level forum brought together twenty-two Heads of State and Ministers from five continents. Also present at the DSDS was Dr Elinor Ostrom, Nobel Laureate for “her analysis of economic governance, especially the commons” (user associations for natural resource management).
A high-level French delegation led by Mr Serge Lepeltier, Ambassador for Climate Change Negotiations and former Minister for Ecology and Sustainable Development, also attended the Summit.

 
As in the preceding years, the French Development Agency (AFD), TERI partner for DSDS, actively participated in the Summit. On this occasion AFD released the book “ Development, the Environment and Food: Towards Agricultural Change? ”.

Dr Pachauri, Mrs Tubiana, Director, Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI, Paris) and Mr Pierre Jacquet, Chief Economist, French Development Agency (AFD)

 
Along with other high-level dignitaries,H.E. Mr François Richier, Ambassador of France to India, and Ambassador Lepeltier attended the DSDS, which was inaugurated byDr Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India.

 
One of the Summit’s invited speakers, Ambassador Lepeltier participated in a panel discussion onWater: Our Vital Commons” .

 
He also met several high-ranking Indian dignitaries on the margins of the Summit.

 
The accompanying members of the delegation were:

- Mrs Annick Mathis, Second Counsellor for Global Issues, Embassy of France in India;

- Mrs Marie-Hélène Aubert, former Member of the European Parliament, Adviser to François Hollande for Energy and Sustainable Development.

 
Mr Pierre Jacquet participated in the panel discussion on Sustainable Development and Consumption, while
Mrs Laurence Tubiana spoke at the session on the climate entitled, “New Frontiers in Combating Climate Change”.
