Debates, Ideas and Books Office

Contemporary French thought and our publishing industry have a dual role to play : to offer the Indian intellectual world an alternative and dynamic model; to be at the heart of editorial cooperation to benefit from its economic development. The programme The Other Thought sets up a strategy of exchanges between creators of French and Indian thought (novelists, essayists, academics) along three axes: Publishing, Debates and Espaces France.

Support for the publishing world is divided into three actions.

The Publication Assistance Programme Tagore contributes each year to the dissemination of French thought by creating partnerships between Indian and French publishers. About fifty French titles translated into Indian languages are supported each year.

This partnership also involves promoting the translation of French works in India, which is the second component of this policy. The first edition of the Romain Rolland Book Prize for translation was established in 2017. The objective is now to intensify this programme by organising an annual workshop for translators.

The third component aims to improve professional relations between Indian and French publishers. To this end, a professional publishing training programme is offered to Indian publishers.

Training in publishing, as well as in translation, is as much focused on student and professional mobility as it is on the training of the network’s Librarians.

The development of intellectual exchanges brings debates into political life in the larger / broadest sense. The first action involves a constant presence of French thinkers at literary festivals in India, which are forums for opinion and the exchange and engagement of intellectuals in public debate. The multiplicity of festivals implies an increase in our presence throughout the country.

New formats are therefore being strengthened, such as Café Philo, which brings together philosophers, public intellectuals, writers, artists and experts around a common theme and connected throughout the network.

The launch of the Rendez-Vous de l’histoire (Rendez-vous of History) will revisit the new forms of writing history in France and India.

A partnership with the Collège de France to create an itinerant Chair of the Collège at the best Indian academic institutions completes these actions and aims at both exchange and academic training.

The main objective of this strategy for debates is to increase the quality and quantity of exchanges between actors on global and transdisciplinary subjects, in a logic of dialogue and cross perspectives. Debates must guarantee France a central position in an Indian publishing and intellectual sector that is favored both by the English language and the richness of Indian languages.

Espace France

A network of the territory through spaces defined in partnership with universities, economic or artistic actors who offer space where every Indian can learn about France.

Whether you are learning our language, visiting our country, studying or developing business, the Espace France offers a platform of information, meetings and entertainment that gives you a taste of France. They serve as relays for debates, identification of new partners and offer access to an Indian public far from the actions of the French Institute in India.

The Espaces France participate in our long-term influence strategy and the anchoring of contemporary French thought in partnership with public or private actors and peripheral civil society.
