Conferring of the National Order of Merit on two French citizens of Kolkata
On 6 February 2017, during a reception hosted at the Consulate General of France in Kolkata, the Ambassador of France to India, Mr. Alexandre Ziegler, conferred the insignia of Knight of the National Order of Merit on Ms. Fabienne Fichet, founder of the NGO "Les Galopins de Calcutta" and Mr. Christophe Plais, founder of the social enterprise "Terra Indica".
Both have committed themselves, for two decades, to the underprivileged children of Kolkata, to accompany them in their educational path, to follow them over several years in order to support their entry into adult life and their professional integration.
The National Order of Merit is awarded by the President of France. It is, alongside the Legion of Honor, the most prestigious Order in France.
It was established in 1963 by President Charles de Gaulle, the founder of the Fifth Republic to reward French and foreign nationals for very distinguished achievements.
