Cardiovascular disorders - Selection of two Indo-French projects

Indo-French science and technology cooperation
Selection of two public-private based projects on cardiovascular disorders

The India France Technology Summit took place on 23-24 October 2013, following President Hollande’s State visit to India the same year (on 14-15 February). This event gathered around 900 French and Indian participants and initiated an “eco-system” bringing together all French and Indian actors in research, development, innovation and higher education. This inaugurated a close technological partnership between France and India, bringing it to the institutional level and fostering closer ties in the area of research and higher education.

Following this event, the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) – a non-profit Public Sector Undertaking set up by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India – and the Embassy of France in India (Science and Technology Department) have launched an Indo-French challenge-oriented programme in the area of Red biotechnology.

Implemented by the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (CEFIPRA), India’s first and France’s only bilateral science and technology cooperation organization, the programme is based on a close partnership between academia and industrial partners of both nations up to the pre-commercialization stage.

As part of this programme, the first call for proposals were focussed in the area of molecular diagnostics for prediction of cardiac diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and/or dementia, cerebral palsy and generation of new assistive technologies for mobility of the physically challenged. Both the partnering organisations, BIRAC and French Embassy, invested €100,000 (Rs80 lakhs) each for 2 years for present call.

In response to this first call, two joint projects involving Indo-French industry and academia have been selected. They are both highly innovative and are expected to lead to advancements in diagnostics related to cardiovascular disorders.

The selected projects are:
