An Indo French workshop to Reimagine Public Spaces in Chandernagore
Mrs Virgine Corteval Consulate General of France in Calcutta and Mrs Alice Brunot French Institute in India spent an exciting session with the team led by the Municipal Commissioner Mr Swapan Kundu Chandernagore Municipal Corporation to discover the final work realised during the workshop “Re-Imagine Your Town” which started on the 14th January and was organised in collaboration with Alliance Française du Bengale and the French Institute in India.
The mentors Samuel Remy of Villette Makerz, Helene Thebault from L’École de design Nantes Atlantique India Studio, Aishwarya Tipnis of Aishwarya Tipnis Architects and Sayantan Maitra of Boka crafted this unique workshop for revitalizing the strand using sustainable reusable materials, with students from Chandernagore College, MIT Institute of Design Pune and the India Studio of L’École de Design Nantes Atlantique.
The students had only 5 days to build original and functional urban furniture. They were also guided when they first visited the Strand by students from the Chandernagor College, who helped them interview inhabitants and better understand the city.
The Embassy of France & the French Institute in India is conducting an ambitious project in close collaboration with the Government of West Bengal to integrate elements for the restoration of the Registry Building and the role of heritage and culture for the revival of the tourist economy of the Strand.
The town was delighted to engage with the poetic surprise brought to them on their turf by the extremely talented team of the Whisperers, Les Souffleurs in collaboration with Apeejay followed by a High Tea hosted by Madame Consul General at the Institut de Chandannagar.
