The Ambassador of France to India, H.E. Mr Emmanuel Lenain, today welcomed the third batch selected for the 2020 Young Urban Designers and Architects Programme (YUDAP) at the Residence of France.

The Young Urban Designers and Architects Programme aims to further Indo-French cooperation in urban development through six-month professional internships for five young Indian architects and urban planners in top French organisations. The current group, alumni of the Delhi School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) and CEPT University in Ahmedabad, will join firms in Paris and Strasbourg in February 2020.

Present at the event, H.E. Ms Brune Poirson, French Minister of State for Ecological and Inclusive Transition, who was on a working visit to India, exchanged views with the selected young professionals on urbanism and environmental issues.

Interacting with the 2020 YUDAP batch, Ambassador Emmanuel Lenain said, “India and France work closely together on sustainable urban development projects, including under the Smart Cities Mission. I am delighted that these bright Indian professionals will bring their skills and views to French firms, and come back to India enriched, in turn, with expertise from France. French and Indian urban designers and architects working together in the long term and sharing their perspectives on urban challenges are very much part of what we envision under the France-India Partnership for the Future.”

Overview of 2020 YUDAP training, February to July 2020:

- weeklong institutional session upon arrival in France;
- 5-month professional integration in 5 organisations with different specialisations in Paris (ENIA Architects, Land’Act, Fabre & Speller, AREP) and Strasbourg (Patrick SCHWEITZER);
- weeklong mid-term academic workshop with students from Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Paris Belleville - ENSAPB (National Architecture School, Paris Belleville).

These French firms will pay a monthly stipend to the YUDAP beneficiaries, while the French Embassy will offer a financial grant. On their return to India, the YUDAP interns will be able to create a wider network of stakeholders sharing common standards and references in their fields.

The 2020 YUDAP event was jointly organised by the Embassy of France in India, the French Institute in India, with the collaboration of Campus France, the French Development Agency (AFD) and AFEX (Association for French Overseas Architects).

Higher Education and Professional Training in France

Located in the heart of Europe, France has long been recognised for its quality higher education system and professional courses, ranking among the top four most popular destinations in the world for international students. The number of Indian students going to France, who mostly enrol for the 1400-odd courses taught in English, has increased over recent years to reach the 10,000 mark this year.

The Embassy of France in India funds them through over 500 scholarships under its flagship ‘Charpak’ programme for Master’s degrees as well as exchange semesters and research internships. French companies also offer scholarships to Indian students, including tuition fee waivers and monthly stipends. The Franco-Indian Education Trust, established with the support of the Embassy of France in India, also funds the mobility of scholars, faculty, researchers, and professionals between France and India for long-term or short-term professional or academic programmes.

Further, India and France have an agreement that enables Indian students to stay on in France for two years to acquire professional experience after the completion of their academic programme. There is a reciprocal arrangement for French students in India.
